How does TwinClean decide that photos are similar?

Exact duplicates are files whose content is identical, byte for byte. Similar photos are different: TwinClean compares how the pictures look, using image fingerprints calculated on your device, and groups shots of the same scene taken moments apart. Burst groups are rapid series taken within seconds.

This compares pictures, not meaning, and it can be wrong. That is why similar photos and burst photos are never pre-selected. Look at each group before you remove anything.

What is pre-selected, and can I change the pick?
  • Exact Duplicates: on Android 11 and newer, the other copies are pre-selected and the oldest item in your library is recommended to keep. On Android 10 and below nothing is pre-selected.
  • Burst Photos and Similar Photos: nothing is pre-selected on any Android version.

You can keep a different item in any group, and your choice stays. Review Cleanup then shows everything selected, with a switch for each category. Nothing is removed until you confirm.

Why can’t I restore deleted photos on Android 10 and below?

Android 10 and below has no system trash, so TwinClean has nowhere to move items to. The app tells you this before deleting, and deletion there is permanent: the items cannot be restored. If you are unsure about a group, leave it out.

Where do removed items go, and for how long?

On Android 11 and newer, removed items go to the Android system trash and can be restored for up to 30 days, after which Android deletes them. TwinClean’s Trash screen lists only the items TwinClean moved there, so you can restore them from the app.

How long does a large library take?

It depends on how many photos and videos you have and on your phone, so we can’t give a fixed figure. The first scan of a large library takes longest. Keep the app open while scanning; you can pause the scan and resume it later.

You do not have to wait for all of it. Each kind can be opened as soon as it is ready. After the first scan, TwinClean shows the last result right away and compares only new or changed items.

Why is a photo I expected missing from the groups?
  • Screenshots, screen recordings, RAW files, GIFs and images smaller than 50 KB are only checked for exact duplicates, never for similarity.
  • Burst photos need three or more shots in the same album, each within 2 seconds of the next. Two shots are checked as similar photos instead.
  • Similar photos must have been taken within 10 minutes of each other. The match is deliberately cautious, so some look-alikes are missed.
  • Videos are only checked for exact duplicates.
  • If you allowed selected photos only (Android 14 and newer), only those are compared.
How do I restore items I moved to the trash?

On Android 11 and newer, open Trash from the home screen or the result screen, select the items and choose Restore. Android asks you to confirm. Items stay there for up to 30 days. Android 10 and below has no trash, so nothing can be restored there.

How do I change the language?

Open Settings, then Language, and pick one of the 14 languages. Each is listed in its own name. The app uses English by default.

Why does TwinClean need access to photos and videos?

To read your library on the device so it can find matches, and to remove the items you confirm. On Android 11 and newer, removal goes through the Android system dialog.

On Android 14 and newer you can allow selected photos only. TwinClean then compares just those. The full list of permissions and what each is for is in the Privacy Policy.

Why doesn’t the space released match my storage page right away?

The space released figure counts only what was actually deleted. Items in the trash still take up space until Android deletes them after 30 days, or until you delete them permanently from the trash.
